Sam Manekshaw was born on 3 April 1914 in Parsi family.His father, Hormusji Manekshaw was a doctor. His mother’s name was Heerabai.Sam was educated at the Sherwood College in Nainital. He was a brilliant student and achieved a distinction in the School Certificate examination of the Cambridge Board.
He want to became a doctor,when he was 15 years old he asked his father to send him to England to study medicine. His father felt Sam was too young to be on his own and refused to send him until he was older.then,he decided to appear for the entrance examination for enrollment into the Indian Military Academy.
He qualified in exam He graduated from the institution two years later on 4 February 1934 and was immediately commissioned as a second lieutenant in the British Indian Army
.In 1937 he met his future wife Silloo Bode at Lahore and they got married on the 22nd April 1939. Their first daughter Sherry was born on the 11th of January 1940 and Maya was born on September 24th 1945.
Sam was the first Indian army officer to be promoted to the five star rank of field marshal.He spent a glorious military career that spanned over four decades and oarticipated personality and signature twirling moustache.
He was popularly known as Sam Bahadur .he was the chief of the Army staff of Indian Army during the Indo-pakistan war of 1971 and he was subsequently the first Indian army officer promoted to the rank of field marshal.The President of India conferred upon him the rank of Field Marshal on 1 January, 1973.
He died at the age of 94 on the 27th June 2008 due to pneumonia and related complications. He is survived by his daughters and grandchildren. Soldiers like him are very rare nowadays.
